2 Corinthians 13:8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
It’s interesting that Paul, who would later boast that I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Philippians 4:13). When it came to standing for the truth and for the gospel, there was nothing which he was not able to achieve.
Yet, when it comes to defeating, or even opposing, the truth, this is something that is quite impossible for anyone to do. This is because, no matter how hard someone fights against it, the truth goes on existing. This is especially as it applies to the truth of God!
PEOPLE ARE POWERLESS WHEN OPPOSING THE TRUTH OF GOD
Many avowed enemies of the truth have failed in their attacks upon it. It did not matter how much money, time, or effort they put into fighting it, the truth of God keeps on existing today while many of them are currently paying the eternal price for the efforts.
This is seen in the persecution of Christianity itself. The enemies of Christianity only maintain their hatred because they cannot fight directly against God Himself. They must fight against the only visible representation of God, which is His worldwide Church.
That means those who hate Christians in Wichita, KS will also hate Christians in California, Montana, and Japan. It doesn’t matter the location because it’s a spiritual warfare they carry within themselves everywhere they go!
Those who fight against God are really fighting against the convictions in their own heart. Incidentally, even if they were to kill and silence every Christian for 1,000 miles all around them, they cannot escape that still small voice within them that reminds them of their sin!
False Friends of the Truth
These are people who, in an insidious effort to make the truth of God more “palatable” and “understandable”, would seek to dilute its meaning and its truth. They seek to use a more “easy to understand” version of the Bible, thus making themselves the editor of God’s holy word, and many people go right along with it!
Fighting against God is not always physical, but often it is through such avenues as rewriting scriptures to better align with the accepted norms of their culture or time. They pay no attention to such scriptures that say, Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (Hebrews 13:8)
When this is done, it leads to a more corrupted version of Christianity where sin is less sinful and holiness is less attractive. Why …Be ye holy; for I am holy. (1 Peter 1:16) when we can just be comfortable as we are?
We notice that it’s always the mediocre majority that these “friends of the truth” seem to attempt to placate; that group that has no real desire to read, hear, or know the word of God with any depth anyway.
Solomon tells us The full soul loatheth an honeycomb…(Proverbs 27:7a). You can’t feed someone who is already full of something else, and yet there are people who believe that if they made the truth of God a little sweeter, more people would consume it!
By taking this approach, these false friends of the truth exalt their wisdom above the wisdom of the Lord Jesus who tells us Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (Matthew 5:6).
WORKING WITH AND FOR THE TRUTH OF GOD
While those who fight to dilute the truth of God’s word often seem elegant, attractive, and therefore more correct in their presentation, we are reminded that …God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty (1 Corinthians 1:27)
In other words, it is those who seem to have the least to offer the world who tend to listen to and speak the most truth about God! Remember, it was said of Paul, For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. (2 Corinthians 10:10).
THE SOURCE OF ALL TRUTH
It’s quite interesting that, though there are eternal consequences for fighting against God’s truth, God allows His truth to be misrepresented on a daily basis to multitudes of people!
We can only attribute this to God allowing humanity to make their own decisions as to what voices they will listen to. This is in line with such scriptures as:
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13)
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:36)
THE FINALITY OF GOD’S TRUTH
Though centuries of human history have shown us that there will always be those who fight against God’s word. Whether this is by outright attack as an enemy or by seeking to “soften” the word of God, which means take away the very conviction God uses to lead people to repentance. Either way, we can trust that God will always ensure His truth keeps marching on.
As Paul asks, What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
Ultimately, it is still true that, …we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. (2 Corinthians 13:8)
